Field, John

Field, John
(1545–88)
   Polemicist.
Field was educated at the University of Oxford. After ordination, he became known as a leading Puritan in London. After being barred from preaching, he produced an Admonition to Parliament with Thomas Wilcox. In this he argued against Catholic practices in the Church of England and for a Presbyterian form of Church government. As a result of this document, he was imprisoned for a year for being in breach of the Act of Uniformity. During the archiepiscopacy of whitgift, he was the corresponding secretary of the London Conference of extreme Puritan ministers and he was tireless (though ultimately unsuccessful) in his campaigns against the Bishops. He may well have been behind the marprelate Tracts issued between 1588 and 1589, a series of scurrilous satirical tracts directed against the Church establishment. Field is remembered as the most effective of the Elizabethan extreme Puritans.
